Hidden London Clapham South: Subterranean Shelter
London
Go deep beneath London and explore a secret underground maze which was constructed during the second World War and used as an air raid shelter. Complete with a canteen, medical stations and sleeping quarters, it offered a safe haven in times of war – even though it’s completely hidden beneath the streets of South London.
Your expert tour guide will take you behind the scenes to reveal fascinating history through the shelter's many purposes. You'll begin your journey by descending down 11 stories, before reaching miles of interconnecting tunnels and hearing operating trains running above your head.
Follow in the footsteps of a South London family spending their first night in the shelter, learn about the vital role these shelters played during the war, and discover what it was like to spend your night there. Get hands-on with genuine Second World War torches, discover what an Anderson shelter looked like, and sit on the original bunk beds turned benches that families would spend their evenings on during air raids.
This fascinating tour allows you to experience the dark history of London like never before, with an exclusive look behind one of the city's secrets.
